A live marine-life field guide that runs on the phone itself. Point the camera at a fish, coral, nudibranch or crab and it names the species there and then — no signal, no account, nothing uploaded. It records what you saw dive by dive, turns each capture into a shareable ID card stamped with the place and date, and keeps a clean geotagged original ready to submit to iNaturalist.

- Can it identify a fish without a signal?
- That is the point of it. Identification runs on the phone using the open BioCLIP model — the species model and reef catalogue download once on first launch, and after that nothing needs a connection. Your photos and your location never leave the device.
- Which species does it cover?
- Thousands, across the tree of life rather than one region: reef and pelagic fish, freshwater fish, corals, nudibranchs, crustaceans, cephalopods and echinoderms. Free downloadable packs add more — sharks and rays, nudibranchs, corals, freshwater — so you carry only what you want.
- Can I check whether an identification is right?
- Yes, two ways. DiveDex captures the clearest, most-confident moment rather than whatever frame you happened to hold, and you can cross-check any identification against iNaturalist records near your dive site — a quick sanity check on whether a species is really found where you are. It is a naturalist's tool, not a substitute for professional judgement.
